Professor
Cecilia Ladines-Llave has
been Chair of the University of the
Philippines-Philippine General Hospital
(UP-PGH) Cancer Institute and concurrent
Chair of the PGH Tumor Board since 2001, and
has served more than 25 years at UP-PGH.
Prior to her appointment to the Cancer
Institute, she was also Head of the
Colposcopy and Dysplasia Unit (1992-1999),
Head of the Gynecologic Cytology Unit
(1995-1999) and Chief of the Gynecologic
Oncology Section (2000) of the UP-PGH
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
At the UP-PGH, Professor Ladines-Llave
completed four years of residency training
in Obstetrics and Gynecology and two years
of sub-specialty training in gynaecologic
oncology. She obtained a doctorate in
medical science from the Kobe University
Graduate School of Medicine, Japan, under
the Japanese Ronpauko scholarship programme,
researching the molecular biology of
gynaecologic tumors and diseases. As an
author of many articles in peer-reviewed
international journals and several book
chapters (including eight papers from her
doctorate), she has written on topics
including the role of human papillomavirus
(HPV) in the molecular biology of cervical
carcinogenesis, the role of epidermal growth
factor in gynaecology, and cervical cancer
in pregnancy.
She has received numerous awards for
research excellence, including Most
Outstanding Oncologic Researcher awarded by
the Philippine Society of Oncology (PSO)
(2004). At a national level, Professor
Ladines-Llave is a Board Member and
Immediate Past President of the Philippine
Society of Cervical Pathologists and
Colposcopists (PSCPC), a Board Member of the
Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of the
Philippines (SGOP), a Fellow of the
Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecologic
Society (POGS) and Vice President of
Asia-Oceania Research Organisation in
Genital Infection and Neoplasia (AOGIN),
Philippines. Her international memberships
include the International Gynecologic Cancer
Society (IGCs), International Society for
Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy (ISCPC),
and AOGIN Asia.
Professor Ladines-Llave is Project Manager
and Course Director of the pilot phase
implementation in Cebu Province of the
Department of Health (DOH)-PSCPC national
cancer screening programme, and Programme
Director of the “Concept of Healing”
projects run by a non-governmental
organisation, Osewa Club, for cancer
patients, their families, support groups and
medical care providers. Professor
Ladines-Llave is also Programme Director of
the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network
Programme (CECAP) community-based service
delivery projects, in collaboration with the
DOH and JHPIEGO.
